01/17/12  Officials Probe Release of Suspect in Cabot Deaths

CABOT, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say a man charged in a double homicide in Cabot was released from jail two days before the killings because of an apparent paperwork mishap.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that James Michael Davis had been jailed after a felony theft arrest but was released Dec. 21 because formal charges weren't filed within 60 days. Prosecutor Larry Jegley tells the newspaper his office never received an investigative file from police.

On Dec. 23, 56-year-old David Linnon Smith and 45-year-old Tracey Mills were stabbed to death. Davis was arrested in the woods about 50 yards from the home.
